1. Keep your garage clean. More often than not, the garage becomes the storage room for a lot of the unneeded things in the house, making it look like a big, disorganized closet. For items that are seldom used, you can make a ceiling storage or a big cabinet to store them. For items that you will be using often like hooks, mesh nets or sports equipment, allocate a space in your garage which is accessible and safe for the storage of these items. Make sure that these are not scattered around the floor to avoid accidents. There are also items that you probably do not need anymore, which you can consider selling, instead of keeping. This is helpful in eliminating clutter in your garage.

2. A lot of the garden and house chemicals are stored in the garage. This is quite common especially if our place is quite small. These chemicals are not safe lying around in your garage area because children go to the garage, often unnoticed. Build a storage cabinet to store chemicals like pesticides, fluids, antifreeze, turpentine and paint thinner to keep them out of your children's reach. Lock the cabinets at all times and keep the keys in a safe location.

3. Keep your tools secured in your garage wall space to avoid accidents caused by falling objects. A lot of accidents happen when the tools are not properly placed or secured to the wall. Ladders should be stored sideways so that children cannot climb on it or it doesn't tip over when there's a sudden earthquake.

4. Always keep the garage closed to avoid any thieves from entering it. The remote control door opener is like a key to your house so do not leave it just anywhere. Leaving remote control door openers in the open makes it easier for thieves to get it. Also, a lot of houses do not have deadbolts or door locks separating the garage and the house. This is not advisable because if a thief gets hold of the garage door opener or somebody forgets to close the garage door, any intruder can gain direct access to your house without you noticing it.

5. Consider installing garage door monitors where it flashes a red light when your garage door is open. This will give you a much-needed peace of mind at night knowing that your garage doors are secured. It can be placed anywhere in your house for easy monitoring and convenience.

6. Consider choosing a more advanced technology for your garage doors. While a key is still practical and common in household today, new technologies are coming out in the market like opening garage locks using fingerprints. This way, you don't have to keep a key or remember any entry codes to enter your garage. This type of equipment is capable of reading up to four unique fingerprints. Better yet, it is weatherproof, wireless and more secure than using a key or encoding passwords.
